Elemental Essence is a solo exhibition featuring the work of Barbetta Lockart. The exhibit evolved from an earlier piece, Life Unraveling, and is used as the core of the installation, both materially and quintessentially. The new piece grew into a total environment, meant to be experienced and participated in by the viewer. If visitors wish, they are encouraged to choose a stone from the felt bowl and place it around the periphery of the stone piece on the floor. By doing so, viewers become part of the creation of the piece.
Barbetta involvement with the arts began as a jeweler in the early 70s, adding painting, drawing and mixed media assemblage in the 80s and 90s. Beginning in the 90s, she added textiles/fiber to her materials repertoire. She finds fiber of all sorts to be extremely versatile. “The material is so basic, I find working with it it very satisfying.”
As a contemporary mixed media artist, she hopes to creates work that is interesting, evocative, communicative, and, at times, unexpected. “My work is simply the result of a very busy and curious mind that seldom seems to take a day off.”
There will be an Second Friday Art About! Reception on Friday, July 8, from 6-8pm. The reception is free.
